Imbuing Meaning

Name an object: change its meaning

Museums including the memorial camps at Falstad, Westerbork and Bergen Belsen often display interpretative labels alongside the objects in their collections in order to give context for visitors.

Consider whether knowing an object’s past makes you think differently about it. Does your perception or emotional attachment to an everyday item, garment or building, such as one of the former commander’s houses, change if you know its history?

Now, take an object of your choice and create an imagined backstory for it. Where could it have come from? Who might it have belonged to? Devise a title and write a label giving brief details of its fictional history.

Either place your interpretive label next to your object and take a photo, or take a photo of your object and use the text box on the submission form for your label.
